Why This Blog?

As I pondered the direction and substance of this blog, I envisioned myself on a journey of learning and expansion. Could life beyond 55 hold some surprises? Could I discover more about myself as I engaged in this dialogue with others? Was it possible that the next chapters of my life could be more satisfying and happier than those earlier ones?

Thrive Beyond 55 is for those who want to step beyond the stereotypes around aging and create a better life for themselves.

This is for those who have set an intention to do more, be more and have more, despite their age.  It’s not about working harder, or trying to be a model citizen, or needing more stuff, or even a flush bank account (although that is really nice!).

It’s about stepping out into experiences that make us feel alive and challenging ourselves inside to live a more peaceful, balanced life; to find that inner strength from which we can be more empowered.

It’s about living from a mindset of abundance, not scarcity.  Having appreciation for what is, and anticipation for what is to come.

I look at my future life as my lab of experimentation. I want to find out what works and what doesn’t. I’m willing to be a little uncomfortable as I try new things.  In the process I expect to discover that the limits currently defining my life are expandable.

I believe I can go beyond those limits – especially the ones that society so readily accepts around age.  I believe it’s time to burst through the ageist barriers, break the glass ceiling on what is expected, and discover the freedom and empowerment that lies on the other side of these self-imposed restrictions.

I could decide to accept that life will never change, or that it will only get worse.  Or I could passively sit on the fence and not decide anything, just let the days and months and years run their course and ‘hope’ for the best.

Or I could decide that life will get better.

One thing I have learned is that intent has the power to create change. You activate this power when you make a decision and then take the first step.

This is my first step, following my intent to live a fuller, richer life.  And I invite those of you who want the same, to join me in this conversation and on this journey.
